Presents

Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered as a precious gift.
— Kate DiCamillo

Contrary to What Others May Have Led You to Believe…

Your child doesn’t need to know how to read before starting kindergarten.
Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!
You aren’t a teacher and you shouldn’t be expected to teach your child how to read.

The preschool years should be a fun, stress-free time of slowing down, snuggling in, and reading great stories that encourage curiosity, arouse a sense of wonder, and inspire creativity.

The real goal at this age should be to foster an early love of learning, which we will help you secure with the information and activities provided in this course.

There are quite a few important skills that need to be in place before beginning to teach a child how to read. Strength in these skill areas will give your child a true advantage when the time comes. This course is about all those things and more!

These “early literacy” skills include:

  • A Vast Amount of Background Knowledge

  • Comprehension Skills

  • Ability to Receive, Understand, and
    Communicate Information

  • A Robust Vocabulary

  • Print Awareness

  • Conversation Skills

  • Letter Knowledge

  • Phonological Understanding

  • The Motivation and Desire to Read

When pushed to learn to read too early, many children come to view reading as a difficult task to be avoided at all costs.

  • Multiple research studies have proven that expecting children to read before they’re ready can be counterproductive, possibly even setting child up for failure.

  • This can lead to problems with self-esteem and
    self -confidence.

  • Most interesting of all is that by the end of 2nd grade, it all levels out. The majority of the kids who were pushed to learn how to read before starting kindergarten are reading at the same level as those who were allowed to relax and enjoy their preschool years.

Meet Your Instructor

I’m Michelle Robinette, mother, wife, teacher and author.
I was a classroom reading teacher for 29 years, during that time I also received a PhD in reading, writing, and digital literature from the University of Georgia. I went on to teach graduate-level reading education courses. In addition to my time in academia, I’ve worked for Apple’s education division and authored multiple books for Scholastic, Educational Resources, and the …for Dummies series.

For the longest time, I assumed parents knew things like what types of questions to ask as they read to their child or that there was great value in reading the same story multiple times.

That was foolish of me, and now I’m here to share what I’ve learned over my years of teaching at the elementary level and through the research I did during my PhD studies.

I look forward to meeting you in one of our courses!
